Illustration and Watercolours for Journals
with Connie Furgason

Dates: Saturday & Sunday, September 22 & 23,2012
Time: 10am 4pm
Location:  St. John’s-Ravenscourt School in Winnipeg,

Weekend Workshop Cost:
                 Members:  $150         Non-members:  $175

2 days - All levels
Journals are becoming such a wonderful means of recording thoughts, travels, quotes and more.  The joy is the individual expression this offers the creator of the journal.  Students will learn basic drawing techniques to capture favourite images or ideas and then incorporate watercolours and other mediums to enhance the pages.  We will explore various lettering styles, such as monoline, free versals and edged pen techniques, to best express the thoughts on these pages and to achieve variety in the text.

Students will create a journal, paint and decorate pages, add text as desired — the beginning of a process leading to a finished journal … whenever that may be!

If weather and location permit, we can combine some outdoor sketching and idea gathering.

Supplies:
- Blank journal – MUST be able to accept watercolour, e.g. Strathmore series 400 Sketchbook, Strathmore Visual Journals (must say for ”mixed media” or “watercolour”)
- Scraps of any watercolour paper you may have
- 1 Sheet of Arches Textwove, cut into 4 pieces
- Watercolours or gouache
- Round watercolour brushes with a good point (#2, #4 or #6)
- ½” Flat watercolour brush WN series 995 or equivalent
- Inexpensive Sumi brush, if you have one
- Pencil, ruler, fine waterproof pen (e.g. Pigma 01 or Mars Staedtler, NOT Sharpies)
- Metallic gel pens
- PVA or glue stick.
- Water container
- Favourite words or quotes you may want to use
- Photo copies of any pics you may want to incorporate (The focus will be on drawing and painting your own images as much as possible.)
- Any other favourite paints or tools that you would like to use in your journal
- Practice pad (will be available for purchase at the workshop)

About the instructor:
Connie’s love for lettering goes back to grade 5 when she won the Silver Spoon Award for Penmanship.  In university her studies in Art and English led to a career as a lettering artist, and since 1981 she has been teaching classes and workshops across Canada and the U.S.  Her work has been published in ABC Canada, The Spirit of Calligraphy, Speedball Handbook 23rd Edition, and The Art and Craft of Hand Lettering and most recently, Fine Renditions.  Ongoing work includes lettering and illustration for the commercial card and print industry as well as private commissions.
Connie was the director of “Pen-Ultima ’99,” the 19th International Calligraphy Conference in Lethbridge, Alberta and two regional conferences.  She has also been on faculty at several international conferences.

Nicole's Workshop

Last Saturday Nicole Coulson provided us with instruction for a booklet sewn on tapes.  The Art Room at St. John's-Ravenscourt School was the perfect setting for a workshop.

We followed Nicole's instructions using the kettle stitch to link the signatures. The tapes were  carefully placed so that they could be woven into the cover. This binding required accurate measuring and cutting of the tape slots. The tapes were then woven into the cover to provide an interesting variation on the book.

We used a wonderful Canal paper from St. Armand Papers and Maidstone Printmaking paper for the pages. This is Nicole's book resting in a protective box made especially for this book. A delightful work of art!!

The day yielded a lot of interesting books and much inspiration!!!  Thank you Nicole!
